yundai’s premium brand, Genesis, is making a notable entrance into the top flight of endurance racing with the introduction of its LMDh (Le Mans Daytona h) racer, the GMR-001, under the Genesis Magna Racing name.
Set to make its debut in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2026, the GMR-001 will also participate in the International Motorsports Association (IMSA) series starting in 2027.
The launch of the Genesis Magna Racing initiative follows the introduction of the Magma sub-brand, which is designed to enhance sportier versions of current Genesis models.
This move underscores the Korean manufacturer’s efforts to forge a strong racing pedigree and also signals that they are all-in for electric vehicles in 2025.
The technical foundations of the GMR-001
GMR-001 is built to LMDh standards, a joint creation of IMSA and ACO, the governing body of Le Mans. LMDh cars are built on a carbon fiber chassis from one of four selected suppliers and use common hybrid components – Williams batteries, Bosch engine, and X-Trac transmission. Genesis will work with French designer Oreca for the chassis and the IDEC Sport team for its WEC entry.
Turbocharged V8 and hybrid system
Although it’ll be built to LMDh regulations, Genesis is keeping the GMR-001’s hybrid powertrain under wraps for the time being, though Abiteboul did confirm the engine is a turbocharged V8 based on the company’s WRC motor. The current rules enforce rear-drive and a total system output of 698bhp, with electric contributing a mere 67bhp of that. There’s also a 1,030kg minimum weight.
Genesis Joins LMDh Elites
Genesis will join manufacturers like BMW, Porsche, Lamborghini, and Alpine in the LMDh category. To prepare for its WEC debut in 2026, the team will collaborate with IDEC Sport to field an LMP2 entry in the 2025 European Le Mans Series.
Core values of Genesis
Chief designer Donckerwolke explains that “This entry into motorsport is a natural evolution for Genesis”. He adds that “As we look to push the boundaries of our brand, motor sport allows us to bring the spirit of Hyperspeed, which is how we create and innovate, in a way that perfectly aligns with our core values: Audacious, Progressive and Distinctly Korean.”
Where elegance meets adrenaline on the tack
The Genesis GMR-001 stands out with its distinctive design, featuring deep-cut vents that enhance cooling and aerodynamics, and a cockpit-style driver’s canopy that offers minimal drag and maximum visibility. the car’s powerful stance and glowing headlights give it a predatory look, ready to dominate the racetrack with both its performance and stunning appearance
